Situation and trends

With the development of cities over the last few thousand years, and especially since the industrial revolution in Europe in the 18^th century, oceans became a dumping ground for all kinds of waste. Solid and liquid wastes from both household and industrial sources, including all sorts of chemicals, have been discharged directly into the sea, carried into it by rivers bringing waste from further inland, or accidentally released into the sea when ships have sunk. The principal forms of waste in the oceans are:

Ø Plastic

It has been estimated that 399,000 tons of plastic waste had accumulated in the oceans already by 2010 [NewAtlas.com] and 8 million tons/year was being added each year much of it being ‘single-use’ plastic items. [EllenMacarthurFoundation] This plastic kills =>>

Ø Agro- and other chemicals

Water runoff from fields farmed using industrially-produced fertilizers carries nitrogen and phosphorous compounds into rivers and on into the sea leading to excessive growth of algae (sometimes toxic), deoxygenation and eventually to the creation of ‘dead zones’. Other chemicals from industrial sites, shipwrecks and sewage also contribute to the development of dead zones whose number is increasing. … è

Ø Oil

Marine oil spills arise from accidents on offshore oil installations (platforms and drilling rigs), when oil tankers that are wrecked, when other ships that are wrecked and their bunker fuel oil escapes, and when ships flush out their fuel tanks at sea. Such spills have devastating effects… Þ

Marine oil spills arise when accidents occur on offshore oil installations (platforms and drilling rigs), oil tankers are wrecked, other ships are wrecked and their bunker fuel oil escapes, and when ships flush out their fuel tanks at sea.

Such spills have devastating effects on sea birds, all other ocean life forms, and the coastal environment in general, with consequent economic and social impacts on local communities. Clean-up and recovery from an oil spill is difficult and depends upon many factors, including the type of oil spilled, the temperature of the water (affecting evaporation and biodegradation), and the types of shorelines and beaches involved. Ø Organic wastes

Organic waste reaching the oceans comprises principally untreated sewage and silage from intensive (‘industrialized’) livestock production. This waste renders water in rivers and lakes unfit for human consumption and it contributes to the formation of ‘dead zones’ in coastal waters and the ocean … è

Ø Invasive species

An ‘invasive species’ is a plant or animal species that is introduced into a new environment and becomes abundant at the expense of other species already present. In the context of oceans, new invasive species can be introduced:

Þ Accidental release of an invasive marine species {pop-up or fold-down}

As an example: In 1984 the aquarium of Monaco ‘mistakenly’ released a non-local strain of Caulerpa alage into the Mediterranean Sea where it decimated native algal species by out-competing them for food and light. Toxic compounds contained in its foliage also accumulated in the flesh of native fish which were able to eat it, making them unsuitable for human consumption. [Laura Malaguti]

Ways forward

Reducing ocean pollution requires:

Establishing and enforcing appropriate regulations on domestic, industrial, and agricultural waste disposal to prevent plastic, chemical and other untreated waste from reaching the ocean
Developing and ensuring the large-scale implementation of measures to clean-up existing pollution
Ensuring the rapid deployment of appropriate containment and clean-up measures in the event of an accident, and that potential polluters hold insurance to pay for clean-up costs
Enhancing measures to reduce the risks of accidents at sea.

Why Sustainability World ?

“Sustainable development”… we hear this expression every day, everywhere. But what is it? The first thing that comes to my mind when I try to answer this question, is this famous definition that I learnt when I was studying environmental law. The definition that was first given in 1987 with the release of the Brundtland Report by the UN… “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. That is beautiful, isn’t it?

But what does it mean?

It means that our development must be in line with three pillars at the same time- economy/ecology/social- it must be economically efficient, socially fair and ecologically sustainable. The main issues related to sustainable development have now been identified with 17 Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the UN in September 2015. They include the end of poverty and of hunger, the improvement of health and education, water and sanitation, climate action, the protection of biodiversity…

But what does it mean?

Well… I do not know.

We all think that we know what sustainability is because we can recite the definition, give examples with SDGs. We know how to sound clever in society but in fact, we do not know anything about it.

So I am asking again…

What does sustainable development mean?
What does it CONCRETELY mean?
What does it imply?
How do we transform these expression and its beautiful definition in real action?
How do we make our daily-life more sustainable?
How can we all become more aware of sustainability and be able to make our world more sustainable?

To me, this is where Sustainability World (SW) comes in! SW would be an answer to all these questions.

I see SW (and the SW community) as the website that we need to visit in order to become aware of everything related to sustainability. In my mind, it could become the “reference site” for everybody willing to learn on sustainability and ecology. It will be a gathering of different kinds of information, targeting different sorts of people. In that sense, it will be suitable for anyone who wants to learn more about sustainability. It will, of course, present the mains themes and topics related to social and economic development as well as the protection of environment. The approach will be completely comprehensive. In that sense, it will give information on a topic, starting from a theoretical explanation, leading to an intermediate level of explanation, before going to a very practical and concrete comprehension of the subject. It will also provide the people with several different tools to learn (texts, videos, music, stories…). The approach would not be only academic because SW would also give the chance to everyone to start discussions on specific topics and to share experiences.

We need our society to change and, for the change to be real and for raising environmental awareness among people, we need initiatives like SW. It would help empowering the population and enable everyone to set up sustainable projects and activities.
